Holiday Sales Freak You Out Already?

Whoa! People are talking about holiday sales already?!?!

Economists are apparently worried about how retailers will perform this holiday season, which is about as surprising to us as hot weather in Phoenix. “The holiday season will be bad — if not worse than the last year,” says Bernard Baumohl, managing director and chief global economist at the Economic Outlook Group LLC.

The article says that sales have spiked recently due to government rebate checks, but that will decrease as the housing slump continues, consumer credit deteriorates further and employment worsens. Some are forecasting the retailers will present deep discounts to give consumers the incentive to shop.

Is it too early to be worried about holiday sales already, or do retailers need to be prepared for the season year round? Do you have any predictions so far, or do we need more time to predict how it will shape up?

It’s never too early to worry about the holiday sales season. Many retailers/vendors profits hinge on sales results from the day after Thanksgiving!

By the way, Ian – I think it’s time for an updated headshot. It looks like you took that one yourself w/ the camera on your phone!

It is kind of dated. I’m actually 75.

Hmmm…is that your Arizona driver’s license photo that was taken when you were sixteen, and is good until you turn 60? Mine doesn’t expire for another 10 years still, and I’ve already had it for 15 years. I’d love to say I still look exactly like I did at 35, but I’m afraid a few things have changed locations.

Regarding holiday shopping – I do think retailers need to be concerned early, and perhaps launching a “start-early” holiday marketing campaign early will help to bring in more sales. Things are only going to get tighter as the year moves ahead. Enticing people to shop early might help.

Overall, I think holiday sales are going to be down this year. Online sales may do better than in-store purchasing due to gas prices, but I think people are really going to cut back this year, or start buying early to avoid getting hit with it all in December.

Let’s get thru Back to School before we start sweating the Holiday Shopping.
