February Another Tough Sales Month

Analysts are predicting that most retailers had another tough sales month in February.

Department stores and apparel chains are seen getting hit the hardest, with same-store sales drops forecast at 10.1% and 8.6% respectively, according to one article.

Of course, the bright spot again will be discounters like Wal-Mart and a few teen retailers like Aeropostale and Hot Topic. This story says that Talbots and J. Crew had an especially tough month.

One thing these articles pointed out to us is just how poorly retail stocks are performing of late. We know, huge surprise. But take a look at this chart. Gap, Macy’s, Saks, Limited, Ann Taylor and Talbots are all trading for under $10, and that’s just a random sampling we typed in.

Ian – are you providing any insight or just repeating headlines? Any robot could do your job – please provide some insight or step away so other people with opinions can make this a REAL blog!

    Alex, you are rude.

    Alex, whoa!

It’s quid pro quo — Ian brings us a blog hors d’oeuvre, so to speak, and the lot-of-us fill can fill up the dinner plate with our own perspectives.

Re. retail now, are there any strong predators out there in-position for a pac-man buy, get a competitor on the cheap, or is everybody leveraged-to-the-hilt with bad leases and negative equity?

    Alex,
You must get yelled at all day at the office. It’s a blog, don’t get so stressed out over it.

you are right – i do get yelled at from time to time. However, wouldnt you all want Ian to provide some insight? i mean all of us can find a headline and say “what do you think?” ie, (theres a stimulus for retail stores – what do you think? OR – there will be mortgage help from Obama – what do you think? there is no insight! at least summarize the issue or present both sides – or take a side? Can I write the blog for a week and see what people think?

    Alex-

The main point of this blog is to generate readers’ comments about their thoughts on industry topics, like a retail real estate discussion board.

If you don’t like that format, I’m sure there are thousands of other places where you can go to read straight up opinion pieces about all things retail.

Or you can start your own blog here: http://wordpress.com/
    It’s free.

I’m sorry you’ve been forced to read this one.
